A solar powered greenhouse uses the sun twice: once to grow your plants, and again to run the greenhouse itself. With the right design and a few solar-powered tools, you can keep air moving, vents opening and temperatures steady without running a single electrical line to the backyard. Below you will find our solar ventilation equipment, plus a simple guide to building a solar greenhouse that stays productive all year.
Two Ways to Make a Greenhouse Solar Powered
- Passive solar design. The greenhouse itself collects, stores and holds the sun's heat. This is the biggest win, and it costs nothing to run.
- Solar-powered equipment. Solar exhaust fans, solar louver openers and automatic vent openers handle cooling and airflow on their own, even far from the house or during a power outage.
Solar Greenhouse Design: 5 Simple Rules
- Face the long side south. In the US, a greenhouse with its long side facing south collects the most winter sun.
- Add thermal mass. Water barrels, stone, brick or a concrete floor soak up heat during the day and release it at night, which softens cold snaps.
- Choose insulating glazing. Riga polycarbonate greenhouses and the Livingten double-pane glass greenhouse hold collected heat far better than single-layer panels.
- Use a sunny wall. A lean-to greenhouse on a south-facing wall borrows warmth from your house and shelters plants from north winds.
- Plan for summer heat. The same sun that warms you in winter can cook plants in July. Good ventilation is what makes a solar greenhouse work year-round, especially in hot climates like ours in Atlanta, GA.
Solar-Powered Greenhouse Ventilation
The products on this page cool your greenhouse with sunlight alone, so they work hardest exactly when you need them most: on hot, bright days.
- Solar exhaust fans pull hot, humid air out to prevent heat stress, mold and mildew. The Exaco and MONT solar ventilation systems include a solar panel, fan and thermostat, run off the grid, and can be retrofitted to most other greenhouses.
- Louver windows with automatic openers open on their own to bring in fresh air as the greenhouse heats up, and close again as it cools.
- Automatic vent openers need no power at all. A heat-sensitive cylinder pushes the roof window open as the greenhouse warms up and closes it as it cools.

Solar Greenhouse FAQ
Can solar panels heat a greenhouse?
Not easily on their own. A typical electric greenhouse heater uses about 1,500 watts, and running one through a cold night takes a large solar panel and battery system. Solar panels are best used for fans, vents and lights. For heat, combine passive solar design and thermal mass with an efficient greenhouse heater for the coldest nights.
How do I keep a greenhouse warm without electricity?
Insulating glazing, thermal mass, bubble insulation on the north side and closing up early on winter afternoons all help. Our guide on how to heat a greenhouse without electricity covers every method step by step.
Can a solar greenhouse fan run at night?
Yes, if you add batteries. Both the Exaco and MONT solar ventilation systems can be set up with backup batteries (sold separately) so the fan keeps running in low light and after dark. Without batteries, the fan runs whenever the sun is out, which is when a greenhouse needs cooling most.
What is the best greenhouse for a solar setup?
Look for insulating panels, plenty of roof vents and a size that fits a south-facing spot. Insulated polycarbonate and double-pane glass greenhouses hold heat best. Browse all greenhouses for sale or call us for a recommendation.
