Overview

The Aeroplus 6000 does the work of two or three compost bins in the space of one. Fresh scraps go into the large top bin, move down to a second level for the main breakdown, and then drop into a maturing chamber at the bottom. Thanks to the chamber system, you never have to separate fresh material from finished compost by hand.

The walls use an active aeration system that controls airflow for good microbial action, and the vents on both sides adjust for summer or winter. With plenty of oxygen, the compost heats up quickly. The material gets turned twice right inside the unit, using a crank handle on the outside.

It is built from 5 mm thick, weatherproof recycled plastic, much sturdier than other three-stage units. The hinged lid locks with a turning handle to keep animals out, the sealed filling flap keeps flying insects away, and the fresh compost stays off the ground where rodents can't reach it. It won a Red Dot Design Award, Best of the Best, in 2013.

Our tip: The Aeroplus is made for household waste and kitchen scraps. If you mow a big lawn, compost large amounts of grass clippings somewhere else.
